What is the
Independent Living Philosophy?
It is the belief that all
people have the right to be in control of
their own lives, their own destinies, the right to try and to succeed,
and the right to fail and to learn from their mistakes. The fact that someone
happens to have a disability should not in any way change that premise.
We believe that more often than not, it is not the disability that keeps
people from achieving their personal or professional goals, it is the
difficulty that others have in recognizing their potential, and in
following the laws which were designed to ensure their equal rights.
We believe that people should not be forced into living in nursing homes
other institutions, when they could just as easily live in their own homes,
with their families, as part of the community, with adequate supports.
